
Momentum from a strong finish in men's +80kg carried over to the final day of competition at the Pan Am Olympic Qualifier with Canada securing two more spots for the 2012 Olympic Games. Competing today were men’s -80kg, women’s -67kg and women’s +67kg divisions. Taking to the ring were Sebastien Michaud (-80kg) and Karine Sergerie (-67kg).
Michaud won his first fight and then met Steven Lopez of the USA in his second match of the day. Unfortunately results did not favor Michaud, falling 3-0. He then dominated his final match, winning 5-1 against Carlos Vasquez of Venezuela. This secured an Olympic spot for Canada.
Sergerie then qualified the third spot for Canada defeating Katherine Alvarado of Costa Rica 9-4. She went onto win her final match 7-5, finishing in first place in the division.
Canada finished the tournament qualifying spots in women’s -67kg, men’s -80kg and men’s +80kg.
The Pan Am Olympic Qualification tournament took place from November 18-20 at the Queretaro Centro De Congresos in Queretaro, Mexico. The 2012 Summer Olympic Games will take place July 27-August 12, 2012 in London, UK.
